i think it's more of because he is a prominent figure within the international otaku community, although it doesn't hurt to know that otakuism also tends to begin from anime to the merchandise.. doubtless he has spent a fortune on collecting though :D

he does get free shit for review; I know he mentioned in one of the tenga articles a while back that they sent him the newest model for free to review for his blog.
